A Season of Care and Connection

In September, we felt the shift from summer to fall at REST in more ways than one. As the season began to change, our community came together through shared meals, volunteer support, and simple acts of care that reminded us how meaningful connection can be.

This month, guests in our shelter shared that they would love an opportunity to prepare homemade dishes from their cultures and share them with one another. What started as an idea quickly became a beautiful cultural food potluck filled with food, stories, and community. The evening became a meaningful time of gathering around the table, sharing a meal, and simply being in community together.

Moments like this matter. At REST, we believe healing happens not only through services and support, but also through relationships, belonging, and spaces where survivors can feel seen, valued, and connected.

We were also grateful to welcome a volunteer group from eBay, who helped bring a little fall spirit and extra care to our spaces. Volunteers decorated for the season, vacuumed and shampooed carpets, and wrote handwritten notes of encouragement for our outreach team to distribute alongside hygiene kits.

They also created a special "quilt of gratitude," inviting survivors and staff to write things they are thankful for on paper leaves. This thoughtful addition offers a shared space for reflection and appreciation as we settle into the fall season.

The impact of these small gestures was especially meaningful when, the following week, a crisis client staying in one of our safety beds received a handwritten card in her RESToration Bag. She was deeply moved by the words and care behind it, sharing that she "felt spoiled" by the love and support she was receiving.

It was a beautiful reminder that even a simple handwritten note can make a powerful difference. A few kind words can help someone feel seen. A thoughtfully prepared space can communicate welcome. A shared meal can create a sense of belonging.

As we move into fall, we are grateful for the guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners who continue to make REST a place of care, connection, and hope. Every meal shared, every note written, and every act of generosity helps create spaces where survivors can experience dignity, support, and community.
