Celebrating Creativity and Everyday Joy

October brought a little extra warmth to REST's shelter, with creative projects, shared traditions, and thoughtful moments that made the changing season feel special. From transforming our community space for autumn to celebrating a guest's next steps toward independence, the month was filled with opportunities for connection and belonging.

Bringing Autumn Indoors

As October began, shelter guests welcomed the changing season by transforming our seasonal holiday tree from summer to autumn. Together, they decorated the tree with warm fall colors, creating a beautiful golden glow that brightened the shared community space.

The finished tree became more than a seasonal decoration. It reflected the creativity and personal touches guests bring to the shelter, helping make the space feel welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

A Collaborative Work of Art

Creativity continued throughout the month as guests and staff came together to contribute to a special piece of artwork for REST's annual A Night of REST gala.

Every guest and staff member had a hand in creating the piece, making it a meaningful reflection of the shelter community. The completed artwork was featured in the gala's auction, sharing a little of that creativity with supporters gathered to honor REST's 15-year journey.

From the initial contributions to the finishing touches, the project offered an opportunity for everyone to participate in creating something together.

Finding Comfort in Simple Traditions

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen during the quieter parts of everyday life.

Lately, guests have enjoyed a more peaceful atmosphere in the shelter's shared living space. Rather than having the television on throughout the day, staff occasionally play calming music accompanied by relaxing scenery, creating a soothing environment where guests can unwind.

Friday evenings, however, have become something of a tradition. Guests have been gathering to watch movies together, creating a simple weekly opportunity to relax, spend time with one another, and enjoy a familiar routine.

These shared moments help create a sense of community while allowing guests to participate in the activities and routines they find meaningful.

A Sweet Idea Worth Sharing

One particularly memorable Friday evening came courtesy of a shelter guest who had an idea for everyone to enjoy: fruit sundaes!

The activity was entirely her idea, and while there wasn't any ice cream involved, there was plenty of fresh fruit and an assortment of delicious toppings. Guests gathered to create their own combinations, and the treats were such a hit that many returned for a second bowl.

What made the evening especially meaningful was the thoughtfulness behind it. One guest saw an opportunity to do something kind for the people around her and took the initiative to make it happen.

That same guest reached an exciting personal milestone when she moved into her own apartment at the end of the month.

Her move was a meaningful step toward the future she is creating for herself, and the fruit sundae evening offered one more reminder of the generosity, creativity, and connections that guests bring to the REST community.

Making Room for What Comes Next

October's moments, from decorating a tree and creating artwork to Friday movie nights and celebrating a guest's move into her own home, remind us that community is shaped through everyday experiences.

At REST, creating a supportive environment means more than meeting immediate needs. It also means making space for creativity, personal choice, meaningful relationships, and opportunities for people to contribute in ways that matter to them.

As the seasons change, we're grateful for the moments of warmth, laughter, and connection that guests and staff create together, and for the community whose support helps make these experiences possible.
