May was a full and meaningful month at REST’s shelter, with guests finding moments of creativity, connection, and joy throughout their time together.
This month, guests engaged in more creative art projects during their free time. Around the shelter table, puzzles, paintings, and craft projects came to life in thoughtful and beautiful ways. From painted shells to sweet duckling scenes, it was a joy to see guests express themselves, try new ideas, and create together.
These moments may seem simple, but they are deeply meaningful. Creative activities can offer space for reflection, calm, and connection. They can also help make the shelter feel more like a place where guests can rest, breathe, and simply be.
One of the highlights of May was a tea party “share and show” event hosted by REST’s staff. The space was beautifully set with tea, thoughtful food, and a welcoming atmosphere. Guests who wanted to participate were invited to share something creative or meaningful. Some shared jewelry they had made, others shared music, and everyone had the opportunity to experience an afternoon centered on beauty, care, and community.
Rae, REST’s Art Spa Facilitator, also created a teacup painting to represent the event. Her artwork captured the spirit of the gathering: thoughtful, warm, and full of connection.
Guests also looked forward to a press-on nail decorating event, which brought another opportunity for creativity, self-expression, and fun. It was something many had been anticipating all month and offered another way to enjoy time together in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
As we reflect on May at the ERC, we are reminded that healing can happen in many forms. Sometimes it looks like a conversation over tea. Sometimes it looks like a puzzle spread across a table. Sometimes it looks like painting, music, jewelry, crafts, or a small moment of joy shared with others.
At REST, we are grateful to create spaces where survivors can feel safe, seen, and cared for. May was a beautiful reminder that creativity, community, and healing often go hand in hand.
