Volunteers Make Waves: Kim Berry's Story of Healing, Hope, and Hands-On Care

This year, during National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the theme “Volunteers Make Waves”—a tribute to those whose acts of service ripple outward to change lives and communities. At REST, few stories capture the heart of that theme like Kim Berry’s.

Kim’s journey toward REST began in 2019 at a pregnancy center where she counseled women facing overwhelming situations. After giving an in-service presentation on sex trafficking and watching the documentary Nefarious, she couldn’t shake the images or the stories of women robbed of their self-worth.

“It grieved me,” she said. “Those years developed in me a passion to help women and speak value into their lives.”

Her connection to REST started with a client she met who was receiving support from the organization. Curiosity sparked action: Kim researched the volunteer program, joined a gardening day, visited an art show, met staff, and enrolled in volunteer training. That journey led her to sort donations in the emergency shelter, and eventually step into her calling as a medical advocate.

As a volunteer nurse, Kim does far more than manage appointments. She ensures survivors receive respectful, compassionate healthcare—sitting beside them in waiting rooms, helping them understand medical instructions, and showing up in emergencies or hospital visits. Her presence brings both calm and care.

But the moments that have stayed with her aren’t only clinical.

“I remember sitting beside a guest in the hospital when she suddenly reached over and put her arms around me. It was so spontaneous and tender,” Kim shared. “Or holding a woman’s hand in the dental chair, watching her face shift from fear to triumph. That’s what gives me joy—when we touch each other’s hearts.”

To those considering volunteering, Kim says this:

“You're in control of your schedule, and you don’t carry the same responsibilities that staff do. For the first time since I was 18, I get to choose how I spend my time—and I love it. When you give, you will get back far more than you ever expected. I’ve seen this truth unfold in my life again and again.”

Her one word to describe the experience?
Gratifying.

When stress hits, Kim leans on two mantras: “One day at a time,” and “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

To Kim—thank you for your steady, compassionate care and for the waves of kindness you continue to create at REST.
