Responding Together in a Critical Moment

July was an especially intense month at REST as much of our work focused on the crisis response surrounding the major international soccer event in our region. Our entire team rallied together, working significant overtime to ensure that every person who reached out could receive the support they needed.

From answering hotline calls and responding in the field to supporting guests in the shelter, our staff remained ready throughout the month. Even during long and demanding days, the team continued showing up with compassion, flexibility, and care.

Nourishment During Long Days

Our shelter guests and crisis-response clients received additional meal support throughout July. We are deeply grateful to the churches and individuals who stepped forward to provide lunches, dinners, and extra food during this critical time.

Special thanks to Encounter Church, Grace Church Seattle, and Brian and Eric from Epic Life Church, along with the many individuals who generously contributed meals. On days when staff spent long hours responding to crisis calls, having a warm meal waiting made a meaningful difference for both the team and the people we serve.

Creating a Cool and Safe Space

During the crisis response, the shelter remained open instead of observing its usual Monday through Thursday closure from noon to 4:00 p.m. This allowed guests to remain indoors, safe, and protected from the summer heat.

The additional hours also created opportunities for slower, meaningful connection. Guests and staff spent time completing puzzles, talking, and enjoying one another’s company.

We also adjusted our Pathways Service Center hours, opening on Monday and Wednesday evenings instead of during the afternoon. Guests could come downstairs to join the community, watch movies, enjoy dinner and popcorn, visit the clothing closet, and spend time together.

Music became a special part of these evening gatherings. We are grateful to Encounter Church for donating a beautiful keyboard. Guests played the piano, shared music they had written, and created joyful moments of connection through song.

A Resilient Team

Throughout a demanding month, the REST team demonstrated incredible resilience. Staff members found small moments to pause, connect, and support one another, even after difficult calls and long days.

These moments of connection helped sustain the team as they continued responding to urgent needs across our community.

As we move into August, everyone is looking forward to returning to our regular structure and relaunching workshops. The team is energized and ready for the month ahead, including more opportunities to gather, cook, learn, and build community together.

Thank you to every staff member, church, volunteer, donor, and community partner who helped REST navigate such an intense month. Your support helped ensure that survivors had a safe place to turn when they needed it most.
