February carried the kind of contrast we know all too well. Moments of joy and normalcy arrived alongside the urgent work it takes to keep survivors safe. This month, our team and community showed up in powerful ways. We celebrated small wins, created space for laughter, and responded quickly when safety required immediate action.
Here is a look at what February held for our shelter and support programs.
A Valentine’s Day Celebration Full of Warmth
This month, we hosted a small Valentine’s Day celebration in our day center. It was a simple, sweet afternoon meant to bring comfort, creativity, and connection. With yummy snacks on the table and a room full of care, clients and staff created their own flower bouquets.
A huge shout out to Emily and our volunteer Mihkai, who made so much of the day possible. Their thoughtfulness brought the kind of warmth you can feel the moment you walk into the room. In true Valentine’s spirit, guests also received little Valentine’s presents, something special to wake up to and feel remembered.
Sometimes the most powerful moments are the ones that look ordinary from the outside. Making something beautiful with your hands. Sharing treats. Laughing with others. Being surrounded by people who are safe.
When Safety Changes, We Move with Urgency and Care
That same day, a situation emerged that required immediate, careful action. One of our guests was no longer safe to remain in our shelter. While this is not a common occurrence, it can happen. When it does, REST’s priority is clear. We do everything we can to protect a survivor’s safety and support their next steps with dignity, while also taking immediate steps to ensure the safety of other survivors in our shelter and the staff who serve them.
To protect her privacy and safety, we will not share details. What we can share is this. Our team responded quickly, compassionately, and with a coordinated plan.
It ended up being her last day with us in the shelter space. While she felt sad to leave, she shared how grateful she was that her final day happened to land on such a special occasion. She was especially excited to make her bouquet before she left, choosing each stem and arranging something beautiful at a time when so much felt uncertain.
As she prepared to step into the next part of her journey, clients and staff gathered around her with hugs and encouragement. She was reminded that she is not alone, and that her courage is seen.
Coordinated Crisis Support and a Safe Transition Forward
After that moment, she was moved to our crisis level support, where Lanetra worked closely with her throughout the week. This included safety planning, coordinating with trusted partner organizations, securing temporary safe lodging, and supporting a safe transition to another program outside our region.
This kind of work is intense, precise, and deeply human. It takes calm problem solving, strong partnerships, and constant attention to safety. It also takes trust. Trust that survivors can place in a team that will move quickly without losing sight of their autonomy and dignity.
We are grateful to share that she arrived safely and has begun the intake process with her new program.
“Feeling Normal” at a Women’s Conference
The week before all of this, Live Salted invited us to attend their women’s conference, and we had the opportunity to bring survivors alongside staff. For one survivor in particular, the experience was meaningful in a way that is hard to overstate.
She shared how much it meant to feel normal, to be in a room where people did not know her story, where she could simply show up as herself. That kind of freedom is part of what restoration can look like.
The organizers gifted clients Bibles and words of affirmation, which was especially meaningful for our current group of shelter guests. At the conference, she wrote prayers on a prayer wall and later shared that members of the team reached out afterward to pray for her and encourage her.
We are deeply thankful to Live Salted for the invitation and the care they extended. A big shout out to Josh for helping make this partnership happen. It was a truly special event.
Volunteer Spotlight: Gabby and Sully
Finally, we want to share a moment of gratitude for one of our consistent volunteers.
Gabby has been volunteering with REST for some time, and she always brings her service dog, Sully, with her. Gabby has a bright, energetic, and warm personality, and she has a gift for making people feel seen. She consistently goes out of her way to bring love and steadiness to our guests, and she often shares creative ideas for engaging with clients across both emergency and shelter spaces.
We are so thankful for her continued support every Tuesday. Volunteers like Gabby help create an atmosphere that feels human, hopeful, and welcoming week after week.
Steady Support in Every Moment
February reminded us that restoration includes both the joyful moments, bouquets, snacks, and laughter, and the urgent ones that require swift action and deep coordination to protect safety. Through it all, our community continues to show what it means to stand with survivors, with steadiness, compassion, and tangible support.
Thank you to everyone who is part of this work through giving, volunteering, praying, or partnering. Because of you, survivors can access safety when they need it most and support when they are ready for what is next. If you are looking for a way to join this mission, we would love to welcome you into the work.
